Lake Como day trip from Milan

The easiest full day if you want water, villas and little planning.

Train to Varenna, ferry across the lake

Take the direct train to Varenna Esino and continue to the ferry pier. Direct sailings in the central triangle between Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio take about 15 minutes, some connections about 30. Bellagio to Menaggio and Bellagio to Varenna are placed in fare band 3: €5.50 single or €17.50 for a day ticket. Bad weather or high waves can cancel sailings.

Villas and gardens on the way

Villa Monastero in Varenna costs €15 for garden and house museum in 2026. The Villa Melzi gardens in Bellagio cost €10. Villa del Balbianello needs a reservation, at €15 for the park or €25 for villa and park. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo costs €17.50 in 2026. Plan one or two of these, not all four.

Villa del Balbianello →

Towns to choose from

Varenna has a direct train from Milan. Bellagio is the classic stop with its gardens and ferry views. Both have their own pages, and the lake overview shows how the places connect.

Varenna → Bellagio → Lake Como →

Como instead of the ferry

The train from Milano Cadorna ends at Como Lago, so you can see the cathedral and ride the funicular to Brunate (7 minutes) without any ferry. The cathedral has a free visitor route through the side aisles and a ticketed part with the transept, choir and sacristies.

Como →

Bergamo, Lake Iseo, Mantua and Cremona

Four trips with a different pace from the lake.

Bergamo

The trip is short and works well as a half day or a full day. Walk the upper town inside the Venetian walls, a UNESCO site since 2017, and add the Accademia Carrara if you want a museum. The funicular (funicolare, a cable railway) connects the lower and upper town.

Bergamo guide →

Lake Iseo and Franciacorta

There is no through train from Milan to Monte Isola. The route is a change at Rovato or Brescia and the line towards Iseo, Sulzano or Sale Marasino, then a ferry. Franciacorta sits south of the lake, and cellar tours are bookable. Not every winery is reachable by public transport, so settle the last kilometres before you book.

Lake Iseo → Franciacorta →

Mantua

Mantua and Sabbioneta share a UNESCO listing from 2008. The Palazzo Ducale costs €18 with the Castello di San Giorgio and the Camera degli Sposi, or €11 without. The first Sunday of the month is free, with an optional €1 reservation. The Palazzo Te costs €18 on the operator's visitor page; a partner note on the same page still shows €15. On Tuesdays it opens at 1 p.m.

Cremona

The Museo del Violino costs €14 and is open Tuesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Torrazzo combined ticket is €10. Check train times from Milan before you plan it as a single day.

Planning a day trip

Four points that save time.

Pick one main place

Two places in a day is realistic, three is not. Ferry timetables, walking and opening hours take more time than the train ride suggests.

Book what needs a reservation

Villa del Balbianello requires a reservation. For the Palazzo Ducale, advance booking is recommended on public holidays and free first Sundays. Palazzo Te recommends booking for individual visitors but does not require it.

Check the season

The autumn ferry timetables on Lake Como run until 1 November 2026, so look up the winter timetable before a later trip. Lake Iseo has been on its winter timetable since 12 October 2026, valid to 21 March 2027. From 19 October to 8 November 2026, Villa Carlotta closes at 6 p.m.

Keep the edges in mind

Lake Garda, the Valtellina valley and the Bernina line are outside this guide.
